The RNA Showgrounds Development Site is one of the most prominent development sites in Brisbane with a master plan that combines the site’s rich history with its future potential. The continuing regeneration will ensure the site is further recognised as a destination synonymous with events, lifestyle and culture, with the Showgrounds hosting world-class events and shows all year round. The Yards will provide a permeable and responsive outcome integrating a supermarket, laneway, two residential apartment towers, terrace housing, retail interfaces and urban streetscape.
The landscape design is inspired by the architecture and responds by using angular forms to create a design language that is used throughout the site.
Generous garden spaces exist within a high density urban environment where residents can retreat within a tropical oasis, escaping the confines of apartment living, where there is space to move, space to breathe, and space to interact. A contemporary composition of “garden rooms” has been introduced where the senses are enticed through cooled niche garden pockets, perfumed flowering trees and shrubs, and lush, colourful and vibrant subtropical foliage.
Providing a variety of opportunities that encourage and celebrate social interaction during the day and night has been embraced within this landscape design proposal. The podium landscape successfully accommodates large social recreation without a sense of encroaching into each other’s perceived space. The swimming pool design reinforces this notion, with seating and lounging nooks created within and surrounding the lagoon style pool.
